Should You Close HVAC Vents in Unused Rooms During Summer?

It’s a hot summer’s day, the central air system is cooling an entire floor, but a room is unoccupied. It seems intuitive: Close the vent in the empty room, and the conditioned air flow will be forced into the rooms and spaces actually in use. The logic appears sound. Engineering tells a different story.

Most residential and light commercial buildings use forced-air ducted systems designed around a fixed total airflow volume. The blower will move a specific quantity of air regardless of how many vents are open. If vents are closed, that volume has fewer outlets, causing the static pressure in the duct network to rise. The blower works harder, consumes more electricity, and the increased pressure stresses duct connections and seams. Defeating both the perceived financial and energy savings. 

How Does it Impact Comfort?

Directing all supply air into occupied rooms without equivalent return air capacity creates positive pressure in those rooms, which can push conditioned air out through envelope gaps and door undercuts. Occupied rooms may actually become harder to condition, not easier. That’s the comfort paradox.  

The underlying problem is that traditional ducted systems treat a building as a single zone. Because every room is connected to a shared pressure network, changes in one zone ripple through every other room that is tied in the same system.

What About the Ductwork Itself?

Here’s where the wasted energy actually escapes. Ductwork isn’t perfectly sealed – even in a well-installed system. Every seam and joint leaks a small amount of air, and most homes route a portion of that ductwork through unconditioned space to reach the rooms that need it: an attic, a crawlspace, sometimes a garage. That’s true even when the air handler itself sits in a conditioned closet or basement.

Static pressure determines how much air escapes at those leak points. Closing the HVAC vents can also build pressure for the system, causing more air to be pushed out through every seam along the way. That conditioned air leaks straight into the attic – that’s a space that doesn’t need cooling. While the vent gets closed to stop “wasting” cool air on an empty room, the system responds by leaking more of it into space nobody occupies at all.
